What are your major services?

Your current spread and growth plans both in US and India ?
In the US, Cybage has a development center in Redmond and a client relationship office in New York. We will open our second relationship management office in San Francisco, Silicon Valley by the turn of this year. In India, Cybage is spread over five state-of-the-art development centers, three in Pune, one in Hyderabad and one in Gandhinagar (Gujarat). In Pune, a 5000-seater campus is underway.
Specific near shore/onsite support offered for your clients overseas?
Our Redmond center in the US is crucial for regular onsite interactions with clients and for boosting our growth initiatives further. Our client relationship office in New York plays a key role in performing dedicated account management.
Your global clients?
Our clients include Microsoft, Symantec, Electronic Arts, SAP, DoubleClick, Lexis Nexis, and HSBC, to name a few. Today, we service more than 115 clients across four continents. 80% of our business comes from North America and the rest from Europe and Asia Pacific..
List of International certifications granted ?
Being an SEI-CMMI Level 5 company with ISO 27001 certification, we stand to gain a lot of credibility in the market. Cybage was selected in the Global Outsourcing 100 list by the International Association of Outsourcing Professionals (IAOP). We are in the Top 20 Best Employer ranking according to a Dataquest-IDC survey, 2007.
What is your strategy for growth?
Over the years we have grown on our strengths organically. The high growth at Cybage is because we spend most of our resources in servicing our customer, thereby delivering a strong value-proposition. Our growth in the last decade has come through good references and by maintaining a long-term relationship with our customers. We are proud to call ourselves ‘a small big company,’ which means that we have the flexibility and fast decision-making qualities of a small company and maturity and branding of a big company.
How important are SLAs in your firm's relationship with your clients and how much are you engaged in a client's outsourcing plan?
Cybage is a virtual extension of a client’s engineering team. As a result, during the entire project execution we work very closely with our clients in helping them realize their objectives behind outsourcing. We do have structured SLAs in place however; we feel that the important factor for a successful relationship is that an offshore services provider should know the dynamics of the software business. Cybage models of operational excellence are built on those dynamics and hence deliver value at each stage of client’s outsourcing plans.
Your evolving global delivery model…an outline?
Cybage has always built successful delivery models leveraging its core of operational excellence. Some of our large customer accounts are powered by a global delivery framework. We intend to replicate such successes to several other demanding projects at Cybage. Our core of operational excellence shall reflect in all such global deliveries since that has always enabled us to contribute to our clients’ victory in the market place.
How do you plan to position yourself in the OPD space in Asia Pacific over the next five years?
We intend to grow our relationships further in the Asia Pacific region. Globally, our value proposition shall remain our operational excellence, which holds business value and helps clients realize their objectives transparently and efficiently.
Advantages of being located in India
India’s market maturity and the availability of technological resources, including skilled manpower, enable us to provide cost-effective software services for our customers globally.
When India is leveraging its strength and location to become a global outsourcing hub, how does Cybage plan to evolve itself in the new and globally competitive environment?
Cybage has a firm presence in India and it is a well-known Indian company in the global IT industry. We plan to move further up in the services value chain to a consulting-led approach, which would enable us to enrich our industry focus to offer robust end-to-end business solutions. India is a matured services destination and holds significant capabilities to enable Cybage to move up in the value chain. |

In the role of President, Arun has been dynamically leading the company since its inception. As a veteran in building alliances with information technology companies, at the macro level, Arun is the executive decision maker for the overall corporate development, strategy and company operations. He has led the growth of Cybage with his strong business acumen and managerial capabilities.
In Nathani’s words, with great power comes greater responsibility. The Rs 200 crore company has grown well and organically so far. “We have to leverage our position and track record today to full advantage. Cybage is not only a professional responsibility but something that is tightly knit personally too. I have to ensure that the success continues and does not fizzle away.”
What are your core strengths and how is your company recognized in the software world?

We ended the financial year March 07 with a turnover of over 180-crore, up from Rs 109-crore in the previous year.
In the last 12 years, we have worked with over 150 clients on more than 750 offshore projects. Today, we are concurrently serving over 100 clients across 4 continents. 80% of our business comes from North America and the rest from Europe, Australia, New Zealand and India. We have a robust team of over 2400 professionals spread across our development centers in Pune, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar and Redmond in the US. We are an SEI-CMMI level 5 & ISO 27001 certified company. We specialize in domains such as internet advertising, travel & hospitality, e-commerce, BFSI, CRM and security. What talent management or skill enhancement activities do you have in place to tackle the attrition issue?
Our attrition rate is around 18%. We have a structured appraisal process which is highly transparent. This ensures clarity and there is no scope for ambiguity.
We identify and provide appropriate training to our employees through our well set up training department. Trainings range from technical, process, soft skills to management development programs and outbound training exercises. We also have a dedicated Resource Management Team that manages the talent in the company.
What are your expansion plans?
We are expanding to become a 3,000-people organization by end of this financial year, March 08.

What are the challenges?
The Indian IT industry needs to keep improvising innovatively with each passing year by moving on both sides of the value chain with its customers, thereby becoming a more integral part in their business. If they fail to do so, they run the risk of commoditization. Strengthening the brand is the only way of ensuring differentiation and recognition among user community.
Another challenge is the fall in dollar which is adversely affecting the exports. Then there is the disparity in demand and supply of healthy IT workforce which is driving the wages higher. What is your success philosophy?
The underlying philosophy reflects in our work culture. The cream of our top management have grown from the time-tested basic principle of recognizing in-house talent in time, and organically grooming them to take up leadership roles in shaping the organization’s future.

PUNE, INDIA: Offshore services company Cybage will increase action in non-US geographies in the next two years.
From a ten per cent share to revenue that comes from India, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, the plan is to hit 20 per cent in the given time period. But this is not a reaction to the current US slowdown, the company said.
Arun Nathani managing director and CEO, Cybage says, “We will not lose our focus on the US markets that makes up 90 per cent of our total business. But we are spreading wings in Europe where Netherlands and UK will be hot targets. We will accentuate our presence in France, Italy, Belgium, Australia and New Zealand too. We have a good mix of customers here already.”
Discounting concerns from the recent jitters in the US market, he clarified, “On a micro level we have not been impacted at all. On the contrary, our business from the US has increased.” The company has clients like Microsoft, Symantec - Altiris, Electronic Arts, Google - DoubleClick and DigitalRiver. It is adding 30 new customers in a year of which 50 per cent is coming from hot verticals like Travel and Hospitality, and Internet Advertising and Entertainment.
There are no plans though of entering the component side of the framework space, given its forte in OPD industry. “We will do it but only when we are ready for it. It’s better to go sequentially and we are currently working on the first step towards the same by harvesting our knowledge expertise from subject matter experts. It’s the skill side of frameworks.”
Cybage ended the financial year March 07 with a turnover of over 180-crore, up from Rs 109-crore in the previous year. The company, which made it to the DataQuest Top 20 Best IT Employers in India for the year 2007, is in close vicinity of hitting the avowed target of 3,000-people by March 08. Its attrition rate stands at 17 to 18 per cent while the bench strength is ten per cent of the total lot.

This would add to the company's overseas marketing presence in New Jersey along with a development centre in Redmond, US. The company has ended this financial year March 2007 with a turnover of over Rs 180 crore, up from Rs 109 crore in the previous year.
“While the current growth at Cybage is organic, the company is also looking at growing inorganically. We are open to acquiring companies in the $10-$15 million range, which can compliment our services and/or enhance our current portfolio, even in the OPD segment,” said Arun Nathani, CEO, Cybage Software.

Pune: Pune-based offshore services company, Cybage Software, is rapidly expanding its operations to become a 3,000-people organization this year. The company currently has around 2,000 people at its development centres in Pune, Hyderabad, Redmond and Gandhinagar. “We have set ourselves a target of doubling the industry growth rate in the country. We are on course this fiscal, and the pipeline looks like we would do it in the next financial year too,” said Arun Nathani, CEO, Cybage Software. He said the high growth is because the low-profile company spends most of its resources in servicing the customer, thereby delivering best value, and not on brand building exercises.

The 12-year old company, which has been growing at an average rate of around 60 per cent every year, is expected to end the year with a turnover of Rs 175 crore, up from Rs 109 crore in the previous year.

It has recently opened a development centre in Gandhinagar with a capacity of 350 seats. In Pune, it is building a 4,000-seater campus with an investment of Rs 80 crore to consolidate its operations in the city. The campus will be ready by mid-2008. The Gandhinagar facility started with 50 people at the centre and is expected to fill the capacity in a year’s time, Nathani said. He said the company would also double its headcount in Redmond and Hyderabad. It currently has around 25 people working in Redmond and around 60 in Hyderabad.

While the company is building on its strengths of outsourced product development, it is also looking at acquiring a $10-20 million company, which will complement its offering and customer profile, said Nathani.

Pune: Cybage Software, the Rs 109-crore Pune-based offshore software services company, is looking to acquire a company worth $10 to 15 million in the Outsourced Product Development (OPD) space.

“While the current growth at Cybage is organic, the company is also looking at growing inorganically. We are open to acquiring companies in the $10 to 15 million range, which can compliment our services and/or enhance our current portfolio, even in the OPD segment,” said Arun Nathani, CEO, Cybage Software.

While the current expansion plans would be funded from internal accruals, Mr Nathani did not rule out the possibility of an IPO to fund further expansion. “A final decision on this is likely by March 2008,” he said.

“The company will open a marketing & business development office in Silicon Valley by May this year. Cybage would continue to focus on its existing domains such as e-commerce, internet advertising, travel & hospitality. We would like to focus on our domain expertise,“ Nathani said.

While the current expansion plans would be funded from internal accruals, Nathani did not rule out the possibility of an IPO to fund further expansion. A final decision on this is likely by March 2008, he said.

PUNE: Offshore services company Cybage Software Pvt. Ltd would be opening a new sales office in San Francisco Bay, Silicon Valley, in the next two months. This would add to its overseas footprint in New Jersey and Redmond. It also aims at increasing its employee strength to 3000 this year. Its current manpower stands at 2000 with development centers in Pune, Hyderabad and Gandhinagar. By the mid of next year, it would be consolidating its three centers in Pune at a 4000-seater campus spread over a built-up area of three lakh sq.ft.

While employee muscle is projected to grow in proportion to its revenue clip, new domains like retail, healthcare and finance will add to its OPD basket in the immediate future. "We would build upon our existing domain expertise in Internet advertising, e-commerce, CRM, travel and hospitality and capture a bigger chunk of business on the basis of that strength. New domain areas will spawn organically and the seeds for the same are already there," Arun Nathani, CEO, Cybage, said.

For the last few months, the company is also on the prowl of potential acquisition targets in the OPD (Offshore Product Development) space. "We are looking for someone with either a strong specialization area or synergy in customer value. Nothing has happened so far on that front and we would rather stay picky," Nathani clarified.

1. A culture of Recognition
Everyone wants to be noticed, everyone wants recognition and everyone wants to excel.
The question is how does one get noticed, recognized or excel? Is your company creating that opportunity for the employee to challenge oneself and to work in an environment that is conducive to “positive” change?

As we are aware, the IT industry is characterized by long hours at work. The old Adage – “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” holds true to this day. Employers need to drive home the idea of adhering to a 9:30 am – 6:30 pm time-slot. At Cybage Software, the Manager is answerable for his team-members having to work beyond office hours – an indication that the Management goes an extra mile in preserving the Employee’s Work-Life Balance.

Employees would then view themselves as a natural extension of the Company leading to employee commitment and retention. Suggestion Boxes, Poll Questions and the like, wherein suggestions are elicited from employees that yields rich dividends!
Work from home. This will make him feel his company truly evaluates “work” and is also concerned about his family and is taking efforts to allow such policies to exist for the benefit of the employee.
Ensuring that punctuality in Entry and Exit hours is maintained and Efficiency Accountable during Work Hours (this has become a little long and is largely debatable).It is necessary to ensure a “work efficiency” check for appraisals and not a “work late” check.

Transparency and Corporate Accountability are the key practices for a company’s stability and growth. The Management needs to be approachable and receptive to the Employees’ ideas and incorporate them while formulating important policies concerning Employees’ Welfare. Companies should strive to embrace professionalism and an open culture of acceptance as both of them working hand in hand works wonders for organization. |

Managers need to be focused, learn to strategize and be effective planners while dealing with their team members. Employees have their own agendas and we need to respect those especially which are out of office hours. Plan in advance. Once an employee knows the amount of work to be completed in a day, work organization will lead to better efficiency. It will promote branding by employees – after all who does what to have a good brand in the market?

Today, if we ask anyone in the IT industry to name the top 10 technology companies that come to their minds; the probability of them naming Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, SAP & Sun (Java) as the first five is extremely high. I think the fight is surely on for rest of the 5 places and contenders are the likes of Google, eBay, Yahoo, Amazon, BEA. |

In an industry where the first mover is supposed to have a significant advantage over others, Microsoft has always turned the table in medium to long term over first movers. Even non IT people by and large know the incredible history of Microsoft and how it changed the face of computers but probably what is even more incredible is to know how they evolved SQL Server, .NET and the latest entrant Zune. IT professionals with expertise in Microsoft technologies need not worry about their future at all; for such an IT professional to lose, Microsoft has to lose, which doesn’t seem likely even in the long-term. However, one always has to upgrade knowledge to remain in the thick of things. |

It is very interesting to know how Microsoft offshores and engages with customers along with its licensing policies to spread its market-share. If we compare reasons for offshoring, the top two reasons would be cost advantages and shortage of man power or technical skills. Microsoft probably is a dream company for majority of IT professionals. Considering that, will they have a shortage of man power? It doesn’t seem so. It’s a resource rich company. Will it offshore just for saving dollars? Again, it doesn’t seem so. Even if Microsoft wants to save dollars, it has its own development centers in India and can ramp-up operations in these centers. However, when it offshores its work to a vendor such as Cybage, the unique advantage Microsoft gets is a potential customer for its tools and creates a virtual team of evangelists who sell Microsoft technologies to other customers. |

Take an example of Cybage; our CEO, Arun Nathani founded Cybage in 1995, and we were Microsoft’s VC++ (MFC) shop for some time before we added other Microsoft technologies over next three years and later got into Java in early 1999. Java was the technology for most of the new implementation those days and Cybage Java group became the largest group in Cybage by 2000. Even after the dot com burst, Java was going strong and was the preferred choice until the advent of .NET in 2001. Microsoft .NET started eating up Java group’s share at Cybage, but the real thrust came when Cybage became a Microsoft Vendor in 2003 and subsequently a Microsoft Preferred Vendor, a status enjoyed by only a few select organizations across the world. A professional definitely cannot become obsolete following Microsoft technologies that will surely be there in future and at the forefront. |

IBM is larger than Microsoft, SAP, Oracle & Sun and will be at the forefront due to its system integration expertise and large mainframe systems deployments. In fact, Microsoft, SAP & Oracle are purely software companies; by virtue of that and due to its large size, IBM is surely going to be leading the way in the future and it’s pretty safe for an IT professional to gain expertise in IBM products. |

Oracle is an incredible story and it is there to stay. At the face of it, every application does need a good database to bank on and things cannot go wrong for the top two databases in the world. Oracle has been a leader on the database side. Although in recent times Microsoft is giving tough competition to Oracle, it is still early to speculate on Microsoft bypassing Oracle in the near future. As an IT professional, having expertise on Oracle is a kind of guarantee to land up with a good career. With Oracle 10g release in 2003 through to last year’s release of a free database engine XE and recent release of unstructured content database, it is clear that Oracle is not going to lose easily to Microsoft. |

Founded on April fool’s day in 1972, SAP is a no fool company and currently the third largest independent software vendor in the world. Since its inception, it has done great business and if history is to be believed, it is going to be here in future. This is one of the few organizations whose curve has always been towards north. The cost of SAP implementation used to be one of the prohibitive factors. However, in the last couple of years, SAP has worked on releasing lighter versions of SAP that are available at far lesser cost; this is going to help SAP get an even bigger market share. The trick is to capture all businesses - large, medium and small - and SAP seems to be geared towards that. Professionals with expertise in technical implementation can bet on a good career here; challenge though is to get good training. |

In the developer community, Sun is known more for Java than for its systems. Undoubtedly, .NET has impacted Java, but Java is still around and will be there in the future as well. This is because Java brought about a paradigm shift in the process of development and before .NET posed challenge to Java, hell of a lot of investment had already been done by companies across the globe. As a company, Sun has been struggling; apart from the emergence of .NET, the instability of Sun has also impacted the cause of Java. However, Sun has been trying to revive itself; nonetheless, even if we consider its efforts not coming through in the near future, by virtue of its current market share, Sun is going to be around in the future.
